Today was the day that the puppies got their first taste of the outside. My friend Jenn came over to assist us and we strategically placed ourselves around and then the puppies were loose! They did great, they ran and played with each other, with Bummy, with Sam, with themselves. I was really proud of them.

They also went potty outside (yeah less for me to clean up). We took a billion photos (okay a couple 100) and some video as well. It was so fun to see them check out the rest of the world. Stinger found a stick and was running with it and then Sam the old man even got into the stick playing.

Our backyard has grass and a natural area and they ran through both. I think Bummy enjoyed it more than anyone because she ran like a mad woman all over the place. Usually Bummy is pretty laid back as Australian Shepherds go but not today! The puppies played outside probably two hours and then took a really good nap.

Later that day I took each one out with one of the older dogs on a walk. I had a bit of flopping fish action but they got the hang of it. The star by far was little Lola – she walked like she had been out many times. She also met up with some of the neighborhood kids and just sat there and absorbed the love. She has two pet human kids of her own at her new house so she is going to do fabulous. I think they are going to love her.

We celebrated the end of the day with puppy cookie treats – they LOVED them. You could see they were so proud they were eating like the big dogs. Too cute!

I have just received Lola(Honey Bee)’s flight confirmations to her new home in Colorado. While her new family is thrilled I am having panic attacks – this is the emotionally draining part of dog breeding. Watching the babies you brought into the world leave.

Each one is so precious to me and the thought of her thousands of miles away from me makes me ill. It does not matter that she will have a fabulous home full of love and devotion. I will not have her. Of course I am blocking all the middle of the night yowling sessions from my mind (girlfriends has a set of lungs on her!)

The family is excited and getting a list of all her needs and me I am hoping the day never comes. Yes I will get to see her again but it is not the same. Luckily Sugar Bee is staying with us a bit longer as her parents are going on vacation and we will keep her until they get back.

We had our official six week check up today and everyone passed with flying colors! They also received their first shots and got micro chipped. The funny part is a litter of Labradoodles was in before us and I am told cried for shots and chips – my puppies did not utter a peep. I say thats because they are herding dogs and herding dogs, especially Australian Shepherds are TOUGH

We took the six week photos too and the puppies were NOT interested in being photographed. I am so happy I decided to do this because every week I see such a progression! The plan is to keep doing weekly until they are eight weeks old and then I am going to do monthly at least until they are two. Sugar’s Mommy has promised to keep up and I am going to get a blood oath on Lola as well. I think it will be great to have documentation on how they grow.

After being badgered by friends and family a new video of the puppies is UP! We took the video over the course of the New Year’s weekend so the puppies are 5 1/2 weeks old. As part of the video we introduced the *official* puppy names. Up until now they had placeholder names as they had not been named by their families, now they officially have REAL NAMES. These are what are referred to as call names.

Australian Shepherds will have both a registered name and a call name. In Bummy’s case her registered name is Bayshore’s Bumble Bee which would be a VERY long name to use on a daily basis. Her call name is Bummy or sometimes Bumble Bee (usually when I am trying to get her attention). The puppies have official call names which in most cases will tie to their registered names:

Honey Bee – is now officially known as LOLA
Queen Bee – is now forever known as SUGAR
Red – will now be known as STINGER
Blue – is now called MEMPHIS

Bummy and Spudd make guest appearances in the video, Bummy especially loves that they are starting to want to play – she definitely is ready to transition from Mommy to playmate!

Wow time is flying by – I can hardly believe the tinkle monsters are almost six weeks old! They had a wonderful Christmas and got too many toys for themselves and then promptly stole all of the Cat Mafia’s toys! They are torturing poor old Sam – they all love him and want to climb on him. He is being a good sport but even a good sport can take so much.

They have their first shots scheduled for Wednesday and they will be getting micro chipped too.

I did move them again – the 6 x 6 pen was just not enough room for them so we removed the furniture in our sunroom and created the Puppy Palace. This gives them a 13 x 15 area so they can run and play and it is in the sun so they are really enjoying that. They are also now letting me sleep about 4 hours at a time. It is actually not them but their mother LOL. She needs to go out potty and if I don’t wake up she jumps OUT of the pen to wake me up!

Weaning is still going well but they don’t seem to love the dry food so I am thinking of making a change to Taste of The Wild.

We have transitioned from the rice cereal to regular canned dog food and goat’s milk. It is funny because they actually know when they are supposed to be eating (I feed them three times per day). Usually when they are done eating they go hunt Bummy down to wash the food down with some milk.

They are all growing very well – I could not be more pleased with them. They are running and playing and a great tome and great entertainment!

My friend Jaime came over to play with the puppies and we took some more pictures and had a great time. If you are interested I have loaded more videos of the cutest Australian Shepherds around.

I will also be adding some other pictures too. All in all the puppies are doing great! They are already figuring out how to use the potty training pads and litter box – some great (Queenie, Honey), some pretty good (Red) and some well….they will get it (cough cough….BLUE!)

We are also now transitioning from Organic Rice Cereal and Organic Goat’s Milk to Organic Goat’s Milk and Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potato canned food. I am hoping to complete this on their four week birthday. They also are going to get wormed again then as well.

They have a bunch of toys and are starting to play…Bummy is spending less time with them and they are fine with that. I am hoping to schedule a spa day for all of them Bummy needs a good grooming and I want them all to have a stress free first experience before they leave for their new homes. Hopefully we can work it out.

Also some other great news, Queenie is officially sold! Her new pet humans had been waiting to see if she was a show or pet puppy – all signs lean to her showing but you just really don’t know at this age. Well they have decided they want her no matter what! Can you pick a better home then that?

At this point everyone else is up in the air – I do have people interested in each of them but it all depends on how their evaluations go. It makes it hard because I have a lot of GREAT homes available just not may puppies. I am keeping one of the boys and another is going to my niece and nephew so that leaves one – just not sure who that one is.

I made a video of the puppies to celebrate three weeks on the planet the song in the background is “A Long Road” by David Bryan who is the keyboardist for Bon Jovi and the co-creator of the Tony winning play Memphis. It has certainly been a long road for me with the puppies and I thought the song fit.

The Children – Three Weeks

On the weaning front we are doing great! Tonight I substituted some canned Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potato for some of the rice cereal. They really liked that! The plan is to take 3-4 days to change them from goat’s milk and rice cereal to goat’s milk and canned food. The plan is to have them transitioned to dry and a bit of canned by 6-7 weeks.

We also added potty training to the mix! They are actually doing pretty darn good at waking up and going to the pads – I may add a litter box with shavings but right now they are doing so well I hate to make a change.

With the puppies I keep odd hours, Bummy goes out in the middle of the night (like now) and then it takes a while for me to go to sleep. I pulled up Facebook and saw that some asshats stole pictures from Sharon Fontanini’s dogs – Beyonce’ and Sid. Way to go! Not like they are not two of the most recognizable choices out there.

Sharon (yes Lance’s mom) was able to get them pulled down but there are others up and people are alerting their owners. I guess you could take it as a compliment that they STOLE your dogs’ photo but wow what does that say about what their real breeding program looks like?

Can you imagine buying a puppy thinking it had gorgeous parents and all of a sudden you get the permanent ugly duckling? I think that the internet is great and does allow people to find dogs they otherwise would not but it just goes to show you that you HAVE TO BE CAREFUL.

In my case I only have Bummy and this website is littered with her pictures and video. It would be difficult for anyone to get that many pictures of her. But in case anyone wants proof I can obviously do so. LOL

I just do not understand how people can do stuff like this. Weird.

We pulled the whelping box out of the puppy area – it was too big AND too small at the same time. Too big to start showing the puppies where to potty yet too small for Bummy to stretch out with them.

They absolutely LOVE the extra area, all of the toys that they had are actually being played with or laid on which is cute. It also gives them a chance to get closer to the rest of the animals in the house. So far Slakk and Spudd of the Cat Mafia have hung out by them and no hissing or issues. In fact I was playing with Honey Bee and Bummy and Spudd was inches from Honey asleep.

Sam the Dog also met them with mild curiosity. I think everyone is aware of them and they have seen the others so it is no big deal. Hopefully this will continue and the puppies will be good with kitties and other four legged friends.

Tomorrow our friend Jaime will be here to help take pictures and maul puppies – they better rest up because it is going to be a busy day!
